What is Corporate Governance

Corporate Governance is often described as a vague concept, with loose definitions giving rise to different understandings of what it involves. Various documents, reports and codes of best practice define corporate governance. In essence, corporate governance relates to the manner in which corporations are regulated and managed.

The King IV Report provides general principles regarding ethical leadership, good governance relating to the board and directors, the governance of risk and information technology, and compliance with laws, codes, rules and standards, to name but a few.

A Company Secretary has evolved over time in response to the ever turbulent changing environment we find ourselves in. In the early years, it was dominated by immaculate administration, then followed by being custodians of compliance and lately by being more custodians of corporate governance. Given the utter importance of King IV, the advancement of company secretary as custodians of good corporate governance adds more value on increasing the layers of ethical leadership and effectiveness to organisations.
